The Coltrane/Hartman Fantasy begins with songs selected from the Coltrane/Hartman partnership. The musical journey continues as Kevin Mahogany, Tony Lakatos and the audience explore what might have been if the Coltrane/Hartman partnership continued.

The show will feature four components:

In a uniquely crafted presentation, vocalist Kevin Mahogany and saxophonist Tony Lakatos have stepped forward and blurred the lines between reality and fantasy. Listeners will be taken on a multi-part musical exploration of what was and what might have been.

The Coltrane/Hartman partnership of 1963 has been analyzed by musicians and historians.  Although Hartman's career wouldn't flourish until revitalized by Clint Eastwood in the "Bridges of Madison Country," Coltrane had a long and distinguished solo career.  What if this short-lived partnership had continued? Would the elemental foundation of jazz itself been altered?  Many questions remain.

The News

"The mellow-voiced Kevin Mahogany reminiscent of the great romantic baritone Johnny Hartman, especially on Hartman signature tunes like "Stairway To The Stars" and "Lush Life." The difference is that Mahogany possesses an easy blusey feel that Hartman never had."
- Jim Newsom

"Kevin Mahogany is a singer in definite ascendance.  Mahogany, the big man from Kansas City with the commanding stage presence, is blessed with an instrument that will never overwhelm but will always deliver the goods in reliable doses. There is an elegance in his sound. There is a sense of relaxation in the way Kevin delivers ; he's in no rush and he wants to allow you the opportunity to luxuriate in these tunes."

The Jazz Times on
Hartman & Mahogany

The lush baritone voice of Johnny Hartman enriched many big bands in the Forties and Fifties including Dizzy Gillespie's and Erol Garner's, but it was the unlikely pairing with John Coltrane that brought out the luxuriant sound of the singer's best work. Vocalist Kevin Mahogany-"the big man from Kansas City with the commanding stage presence"-honors the memory of the talented singer. - Jazz Times
